How to Get the Ruby and Sapphire in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

You can get the Ruby in the caves of Mt. Ember, while the Sapphire can be recovered from the Dotted Hole in Sixth Island. Hand it over to Celio to fix his long-distance trading machine. However, Team Rocket is out to wreak havoc on the islands, and getting the gems won’t be as straightforward. Follow the comprehensive guide below to know the steps in finishing the Sevii Islands quest!

Getting to the Sevii Islands

The Sevii Islands are a group of islands located in the Kanto region, and only accessible in the FireRed and LeafGreen games. You get first access to them after defeating Cinnabar Island’s Gym Leader, Blaine.

After defeating Blaine, Bill will come up to you and ask you to accompany him to the islands to meet with his friend, Celio.

You can accept his invitation and immediately ride to the Sevii Islands. Alternatively, you can delay for a while, as Bill will wait for you in Cinnabar Island’s Poké Center once you are ready.

To finish the Sevii Islands quest seamlessly, it is recommended to accomplish the following events before heading to the Sevii Islands:

  • Beat the Elite Four – Beating the Elite Four and getting into the Hall of Fame is a prerequisite for acquiring the National Pokédex, another requirement for the Sevii Islands quest. In addition, Elite Four’s Lorelei will be on one of the islands for a quest, provided you have already beaten her in the Pokémon League

  • National Pokédex – the goal of acquiring the Ruby and Sapphire gems is to enable trading Pokémon from the Hoenn region, and the regular Pokédex doesn’t have the entries for these new species. Catch at least 60 different kinds of Pokémon for Prof. Oak to upgrade your Pokédex to proceed with the Islands quest

It is also recommended to bring Pokémon that have learned the HM moves Cut, Surf, Strength and Waterfall as you will be encountering situations where you need to use them throughout the quest.

First Visit to One Island

Once you have beaten the Elite Four and have your Pokédex upgraded, go back to Bill in Cinnabar Island and make your way to One Island together on Celio’s boat.

Speak to Bill and Celio on your first arrival and they talk about fixing the long-distance trading machine in One Island’s Poké Center. While waiting, Bill asks you to deliver a meteorite to his friend in Two Island. Celio also gives the Tri-Pass for you to get access to the first three Sevii Islands.

Ride the ferry to Two Island and head to the Game Corner. Before you can hand the meteorite to Bill’s friend, he asks for your help in finding his missing daughter. You can find Lostelle in Three Island’s Berry Forest. Once done, hand him the meteorite to finish Bill’s errand.

Retrieving the Ruby

Once back in One Island, Bill and Celio would have already finished their machine, and you return to the mainland for a while. But with the Lostelle quest done, you can now start the mission to retrieve the gems for Celio. Head back to One Island from Vermillion City port. Use your Tri-Pass to ride the Seagallop Ferry.

Talk to Celio in the Poké Center and he mentions he is fiddling with the network machine to enable long-distance trading but is missing the gemstones needed for the machine to function. He drops the clue that the stone can be found on One Island.

The Ruby gemstone can be found in the depths of the cave at the foot of Mt. Ember. Mt. Ember is located north of One Island. To get there, have your Pokémon use Surf on the beach on the eastern side of this part of the island.

Surf a few ways up ahead until you reach another beach. Continue up ahead past some trainers, battling them along the way until you reach another shore. Use Surf on this and cross the water to reach another part of the island.

Climb up the steps from where you get off and turn right until you see some Team Rocket grunts. Approach them to eavesdrop and you will overhear one of the two passwords required to access Team Rocket’s warehouse.

Beat them in battle afterwards and enter the cave they have been digging to find yourself inside the foot of Mt. Ember.

Inside, follow the linear path across the cave, climbing down the stairs as needed. Eventually, you will reach an area where you need Strength to move boulders. Move them as follows:

If done correctly, you should be able to get to the next set of stairs like so:

You will need to use Strength again on this new floor of the cave. Have your Pokémon move the boulder like this to pass through:

When you are met with two directions on which way to go, take the southern route and follow the path downwards. Use Strength to move another boulder out of the way again. Climb down the stairs to reach the new area.

The new area will have unique structures in it. Skip it for now and go down another set of stairs to finally find where the Ruby is located.

Take it and go back the way you came from to return to Celio. You can also use an Escape Rope to make your way out faster.

Once back in One Island’s Poké Center, hand the Ruby to Celio.

He will then ask another favor from you to find Ruby’s companion gemstone for the trading machine – a Sapphire. He will then hand you an updated map of the Sevii Islands, and the Rainbow Pass to access Islands Four to Seven!

Retrieving the Sapphire

The Sapphire gemstone can be found in Sixth Island’s Dotted Hole.

However, the entrance will be blocked by a man when you first arrive, so do not bother heading there first.

To access the Dotted Hole, the Sapphire retrieval quest actually starts in Four Island. Head there using your Rainbow Pass and the Seagallop Ferry. When you arrive, you meet again with your rival who mentions you will be seeing a familiar face in the island.

Four Island is actually home to Elite Four’s Lorelei! To find her, go past her house and up the small patch of water to reach the Icefall Cave.

Once inside Icefall Cave, you are met with a huge waterfall. Lorelei will be in another part of the cave, just past the waterfall. If you have a Pokémon with the HM move Waterfall, use it to climb up the falls. Otherwise, navigate through the Icefall Cave to find the HM.

From where you get off the waterfall, climb the steps down to find an entrance to another part of the cave. Enter it to find Lorelei up ahead, fighting with some Team Rocket goons who are trying to poach some Pokémon.

She will enlist your help to rid the cave of the poachers. After the battle, the Rocket grunt will reveal they are keeping the poached Pokémon in Team Rocket’s warehouse in Five Island.

Do not head to Five Island just yet, however. You will need the second password to access Team Rocket’s warehouse. Make your way back to Six Island to the Dotted Hole, where the Sapphire is located.

Follow the map below to get to the Dotted Hole from Six Island’s Poké Center. You will need to battle some trainers along the way from Ruin Valley.

After finishing Lorelei’s side quest, the man previously blocking the entrance should be gone. Inspect the door and it won’t budge just yet.

Have your Pokémon use Cut on the door to gain entrance into the Dotted Hole.

Once inside, you will see some holes wherein you get transported into other parts of the cave. Drop into the first hole directly from the entrance.

From where you land, you are met with four holes in each corner of the room, with a structure in the middle.

Follow the sequences of the four corner holes like so: Up, Left, Right and Down, until you get to the area where the Sapphire is located.

When you see the Sapphire, the gemstone will be immediately swiped from you by the scientist previously blocking the Dotted Hole entrance.

He says he will sell it to Team Rocket in their warehouse in Five Island, and gives you the second password.

Exit the Dotted Hole and finally make your way to Five Island to head into Team Rocket’s warehouse.

Inside Team Rocket’s Warehouse

Team Rocket’s warehouse can be found just after Five Isle Meadow. Navigate through Five Isle Meadow like so, battling Team Rocket grunts along the way:

You will automatically enter the two passwords to access the warehouse door.

Once inside the warehouse, you will see directional tiles that transport the player to where the arrows are pointing at. Take the first directional tile heading to the left and follow the floor map below:

From the area where you get off the tile, you can pick up an Up-Grade and battle the Rocket Grunt along the way. Make your way down by taking the first directional tiles and following the directional path indicated in the guide below.

Fight the grunt and take the directional tile immediately next to him. You will get off on the textured, yellow tile. From where you get off, back track and climb up on the regular tiles like in the map below to make it to the room above.

After picking up the TM item in the room, take the right tile downwards. You will need to find another grunt here before you make it to the last two rooms.

After beating this grunt, head into the rooms to find two final Team Rocket trainers. Battle the lady grunt ahead of you, the one having doubts about their operation.

Finally, head into the room and battle the last grunt. Just ahead of him is the scientist who has stolen the Sapphire. Talk to him to engage in battle.

Beat Gideon in battle to recover the Sapphire. With the Sapphire back in your possession, finally head back to One Island and hand the Sapphire to Celio.

Celio acknowledges the work that has gone into recovering the Sapphire, and after some tinkering with the machine, he announces he was successful in linking up with the Hoenn region.

With the Ruby and Sapphire in place and the network machine connected, you are now able to trade with others to bring Hoenn Pokémon to your FireRed or LeafGreen game! Congratulations!
