How to Breed Pokémon in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

You can breed Pokémon by raising eggs in a Pokémon Daycare. Bring one Male and one Female Pokémon to Four Island’s Daycare Center. If they are compatible, the two Pokémon would breed a Pokémon egg.

Getting to Four Island

The Daycare Center is located on Sevii Island’s Fourth Island. From the main map, head to Vermillion City.

Get to Vermillion City’s port and ride the Seagallop Ferry to Four Island. Take note that you need a Rainbow Pass to gain access to Sevii Islands Four to Seven.

Upon arriving in Four Island, go up a bit from the Pokémon Center to see the building with a man standing outside. Talk to him and he will introduce himself as the Day-Care Man who helps trainers raise Pokémon. He mentions you need to talk to his wife should you want to leave Pokémon at their daycare.

Go inside and talk to his wife. She’ll ask which Pokémon you want them to raise, adding that they can raise two Pokémon at the same time.

After leaving your Pokémon, you can check how compatible they are with one another by talking to the man outside. Depending on his text prompt, you’ll get an idea of how likely your two Pokémon can produce an egg.

The dialogue, “The two seem to get along very well” means your Pokémon are of the same egg group and are highly likely to produce an egg. Other dialogues which can produce an egg include “The two seem to get along” and “They don’t seem to like each other very much,” though it might take a longer time for them to breed.

However, if you get the dialogue that states the two Pokémon prefer to play with others, it means either they’re of different egg groups, of the same gender, or just unbreedable.

Walk around a bit or do some quests to pass the time. When you return to the Daycare, the old man will advise if your Pokémon pair had formed an egg, and if you would want to take it.

Your egg will take up the slot of one Pokémon in your party. To hatch it, either go about your journey and walk the necessary steps to get them to hatch.

You can also fast-track the hatching process by riding your bike and maximizing your step count.  The Cycling Road is one of the best places to rack in a lot of steps. The number of steps needed to hatch an egg varies depending on the Pokémon inside.

Keep on checking on the egg as it will give an indication if the egg is about to hatch, such as if the egg has started to make sounds.

Eventually, when you have reached the required number of steps, you will get a text prompt alerting you of the egg hatching, followed by a cute cutscene of the new hatchling.

Hatchling Pokémon will be at Level 5 when they come out of their eggs. Depending on the type of Pokémon you have paired at the Daycare Center, you can either get an entirely new type of Pokémon (baby Pokémon) or get the lowest evolution of the mother Pokémon.

Breeding Tips

Some conditions must be met for your Pokémon to produce an egg, since not all Pokémon can breed. Legendary Pokémon, for example, cannot be bred. To ensure you can start the process, you need two Pokémon of both genders.

Secondly, you need Pokémon who are compatible to breed. This means they should belong to the same egg group. In the example above, Igglybuff was hatched from a Male Pikachu and a Female Jigglypuff. Although the parents are of different species, the two Pokémon were still able to breed as they belong to the same egg group of Field and Fairy. The rest of the Egg Groups are as follows:

For genderless Pokémon, you can still try to breed them with a Ditto. The Pokémon hatchling will always follow the species of the other Pokémon paired with Ditto, and the egg will hatch to the mother Pokémon’s lowest evolution form.

Breeding can bring a lot of benefits. One of the benefits are baby Pokémon, which can only be obtained and added to your Pokédex by breeding them with compatible parents and hatching their egg. Take note however that not all Pokémon can produce baby Pokémon.

Another reason why trainers breed is to obtain certain moves. TM moves can be passed down to the Pokémon hatchling as long as they are also capable to learn them.

There are also Egg moves, which are moves that can only be learned by breeding. Pichu, for example, can learn the move “Double Slap” from a male Jigglypuff, who has naturally learned this move by leveling up.

It’s also important to note that male Pokémon pass down their moves, while female Pokémon pass down their species. With these tips in mind, see how breeding the same Pokémon together can result in different offspring.

How to Breed Igglybuff and Pichu

A male Jigglypuff and female Pikachu will always produce a Pichu. Switching their genders around so you have a female Jigglypuff and Male Pikachu will breed an Iglybuff.

All in all, breeding Pokémon is a very satisfying activity in the later stages of the game. See what other types of new Pokémon you can add to your Pokédex by breeding compatible pairs together!
