How to Get the National Pokédex in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

You can get the National Pokédex from Prof. Oak after catching at least 60 different kinds of Pokémon. Beat the Elite Four to get into the Hall of Fame and finish Lostelle’s quest in the Sevii Islands before you talk to Prof. Oak to have your Pokédex updated.

What’s New with the National Pokédex

The National Pokédex is an updated version of the player’s region-specific Pokédex. Instead of recording only the native Pokémon species in Kanto for both FireRed and LeafGreen games, the National Pokédex contains entries of all Pokémon known to exist.

This enables you to record information from Pokémon traded from other games or regions such as Johto and Hoenn. This also opens up the Pokédex entries for rare and legendary Pokémon. For example, Raikou, Entei or Suicune will only start to spawn in-game after acquiring the National Pokédex.

Upgrade your Pokédex

To upgrade your Pokédex to the National Pokédex, the key requirement is having captured at least 60 different species of Pokémon. Aside from that, make sure to have finished the pre-requisite events below:

  • Beat the Elite Four – Entering the Hall of Fame is one of the requirements for getting the National Pokédex. After battling the Elite Four and getting transported back to Pallet Town, Prof. Oak will talk to you to ask about your Pokédex progress.

After accomplishing the requirements above, visit Prof. Oak in his lab in Pallet Town

Talk to him and he will upgrade your Pokédex into the National Pokédex. Your rival will also arrive and have his Pokédex upgraded.
