How to Beat Viridian City’s Gym Leader in Pokémon FR/LG

You can beat Viridian City’s Gym Leader by leveling your Pokémon sufficiently and using your type-advantage against his Ground-type Pokémon. Visit Viridian City after beating the previous gym leaders to find out the identity of their gym leader!

Viridian City Gym

Viridian City’s Gym is located in the northern part of town.

After battling and winning against the previous seven gym leaders, Viridian City’s Gym will finally open up, as its leader will have already returned. As for his identity, you’ll know soon enough.

When you enter the gym, you are met with the familiar directional tiles that transport you to other areas in the room when you step onto them.

To come face-to-face with Viridian City’s Gym Leader, you need to navigate through the gym’s fairly easy maze, battling some gym members along the way. From where you enter the gym, start by heading into the room with the three trainers like so:

You can avoid the three trainers and continue up the aisle to the right, but should you want to battle them, their party and Pokémon line-up are as follows:

Once you’re done with the trainers in the room, go up the aisle and fight the trainer along the way.

Continue on up until the trainer at the back of the wall meets you back down to engage you in battle.

Continue on up until the trainer at the back of the wall meets you back down to engage you in battle.

You’ll find yourself in the room where Viridian City’s Gym Leader is! There’s a trainer just below that room though, should you want to get in one final practice before you meet with their leader.

Finally, save up when you meet Giovanni, Viridian City’s Gym Leader!

Battling Giovanni

Who knew that the mysterious Viridian City’s Gym Leader was Team Rocket’s boss? Giovanni will come back to the gym after you’ve chased him and his grunts out from the Rocket Game Corner in Celadon City, the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town and Silph Co. Building in Saffron City. Get ready to fight your final gym battle!

Giovanni specializes in Ground-type Pokémon, so avoid using Fire, Electric, Poison, Rock and Steel-type Pokémon if you don’t want to have a hard time. Water, Ice and Grass Pokémon are at an advantage, so feel free to maximize that edge against Giovanni. His Pokémon are also at the Level 42-50 range, so make sure your party is adequately leveled up.

If you use your type advantage well, the battle should be pretty straightforward. Watch out for his Pokémon’s Earthquake move which can deal critical damage. Giovanni also uses Hyper Potions to heal his Pokémon when their HP goes low.

Eventually you will be able to best Giovanni, and your victory will earn you the Earthbadge.

You also get the ability to have all Pokémon regardless of level obey you, and Giovanni gifts you TM26 Earthquake.

Congratulations! You have now bested the eight gym leaders in the region and have their badges as proof! It’s now time to reach for your next goal of becoming Pokémon Champ – beating the Elite Four!
