Where to Find Metal Coats in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

You can get a Metal Coat in Memorial Pillar. Surf to the smaller island by the eastern coast of Five Island to find a Poké Ball on the ground containing a Metal Coat. You can also win a Metal Coat as a prize by beating the Knockout challenge in Seven Island’s Trainer Tower.

Five Island’s Memorial Pillar

The first Metal Coat is a found item in Memorial Pillar.

To start, head to Five Island. From the island Poké Center, walk towards and around Five Isle Meadow until you reach an area where you can have your Pokémon use Surf.

Surf a few ways downwards until you see a small islet with a tower in the middle of it. Get off your Pokémon here and go to the area towards the tower.

You can talk to the man in front of the memorial to learn about his departed Onix, but just past him you should see a Poké Ball on the ground. Click on it to get the Metal Coat.

Seven Island’s Trainer Tower

You can also get another Metal Coat by competing in one of the challenges in Trainer Tower. Proceed to Seven Island and keep north until you find the tall tower. You need to have a Pokémon who knows how to surf to get to that part of the island.

Head inside to find a Poké Center and a mart. Heal your party and stock up on necessary items for battle before you start the challenge. Having PP restoring items is also a plus, although you won’t find any of those for sale in the mart inside the tower.

Once you’re done preparing, talk to the receptionist at the counter and she will explain how the Trainer Tower is a time-based challenge called “Time Attack”. The goal is to reach the top of the tower in a set time.

After confirming all the info you need before starting the challenge, click the Knockout option when presented.

Knockout is a one-on-one Pokémon battle with three separate trainers per floor for eight levels until you reach the top.

The time limit to earn the reward is 59 minutes and 59 seconds, so you have plenty of time to breeze through the trainers per floor.

When you make it to the top before the set time, you’ll receive the Metal Coat as a reward.

Metal Coat Uses

Metal Coats are held items preferably by Steel-type Pokémon as they power up Steel-attack moves by 10% more.

Metal Coats are also evolutionary items. Have a Scyther or Onix hold a Metal Coat upon trading to have them evolve into Scizor and Steelix, respectively.
