How to Beat Celadon City’s Gym Leader in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

Beat Erika, Celadon City’s Gym Leader by using your type advantage against her grass Pokémon. Head to Celadon City and battle against her other gym members while following this guide to ensure your victory.

Celadon City Gym

Celadon City’s Gym is located a few ways down south of town.

From the Pokémon Center, keep going down past the Game Corner and the row of houses until you find an area accessible by cutting a small tree bush. Have your Pokémon use Cut on it.

Keep to your left until you eventually find Eriika’s Gym. Head inside to see its layout as follows. Erika will be right in the middle of the gym, flanked by the rest of her gym members.

Whichever way you will go, some of the trainers inside are unavoidable. Here’s a quick guide list of the trainers inside the gym and their party. Take note that most if not all of them would employ grass-type Pokémon.

From the entrance, the lady to your left will have the following party:

Just above her, the trainer to your right has the following Pokémon:

To the left side of the gym, the trainer by the small bush has the following party for you to challenge:

While on the opposite side, the lady trainer’s Pokémon will be as follows:

Use Cut on either one of the three small bushes to get into the center area where Erika is. The trainer with the blue hair at the bottom has the following Pokémon line-up:

Finally, the two trainers flanking Erika will have the following Pokémon in their arsenal

When you’re ready, save up to face Celadon City’s Gym Leader, Erika.

Beating Erika

Erika is known as the Nature-Loving Gym Leader, as she specializes in Grass-type Pokémon

Grass-type Pokémon are strong against Water, Ground and Rock-type Pokémon, so a Squirtle starter could be at a disadvantage. On the other hand, Grass Pokémon are weak against Bug, Fire, Flying, Ice and Poison-type moves, so make sure to use this to your advantage.

Erika’s Pokémon line-up and their move sets are as follows:

If you have a type advantage, feel free to use it against Erika. Her party will liberally use status-inflicting moves that may render your Pokémon poisoned, paralyzed or asleep. Be ready with your antidotes, paralysis heals and awakenings to make sure the battle goes smooth.

Aside from keeping this in mind, make sure you have trained your Pokémon enough to be at the same level or higher than Erika’s party. Erika also uses Hyper Potions on her Pokémon once their HP goes down.

Keep barraging her Pokémon with your attacks, until they eventually faint. Once her party is defeated, Erika will grant you the Rainbowbadge as a sign of your victory.

From here on out, Pokémon at Level 50 and above will obey you. You also get the ability to use Strength outside of battle. Erika also gives you TM 19 Giga Drain, which you can teach to your Pokémon.

Congratulations on winning your fourth badge! You are now halfway on your gym badge journey, so keep following this guide until you make it big in the Pokémon League!
