Where to Get Black Belts in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

You can get Black Belts by stealing from Black Belt trainers throughout the game. You can’t find Black Belts as a Poké Ball item in the open world, so stealing from trainers’ Pokémon is your only way of getting them.

Stealing Items from Pokémon

There are two moves in the game that can steal an enemy’s held item. The first is Covet, which can only be learned by Snorlax at Level 45. It’s a Normal-type attack move that also steals the foe’s held item.

The only other move is Thief, which is learned via TM. You can find TM 46 Thief in Mt. Moon and teach it to whichever Pokémon you prefer. It doubles as an attack move and a move that takes the enemy’s item.

Now that you have Pokémon with moves that can steal or take held items, the most accessible Black Belt trainers in the game can be found on Route 15 on the outskirts of Fuchsia City.

From the Poké Center, jump the ledge and head to the guardhouse towards Route 15. Keep walking to your right until you see the end of the ledge with a small tree that can be cut down. Bring Pokémon and have it use Cut on the tree so you can access the area.

Talk to the two trainers standing next to each other to battle them. If you’ve already beaten them before, use your VS Seeker to engage with them again.

You’ll do the battle in Doubles, so it’s a good idea to have your Snorlax and your Pokémon with the move Thief together to maximize your chances in getting the Black Belt. Make sure they aren’t holding any items so you can keep the items you steal. Have your Snorlax use Covet on either of the Hitmon Pokémon until a pouch of some sort appears on screen.

Have your Pokémon with the move Thief do the same. It might take a couple of tries until you are successful in stealing the item. It will be shown on the screen if you did manage to steal a Black Belt.

Black Belt

Now that you’ve stolen what you wanted, beat the trainers as you normally would. You can now check your Pokémon’s info if they are holding the item. If you’ve followed this guide to a tee, you should have two Black Belts immediately in your possession.

This method is repeatable, so anytime you would want another Black Belt, you can just re-challenge the trainers using the VS Seeker and steal from them.

There are also other Black Belters in the game from whom you can steal the Black Belt. They can be found in Saffron City’s Fighting Dojo, Viridian City Gym and in the cave on Victory Road before the Indigo Plateau. Take note though that not all of them are available for rematches through the VS Seeker, especially the gym members.

Using the Black Belt

As per its name, a Black Belt is a held item that ups the power of Fighting-type moves. Since the item cannot be found in the overworld, you can mostly find these being held by trainers’ Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, or other Fighting-type Pokémon.

Although you can give the Black Belt to be held by whichever Pokémon you want, it will serve its purpose well for you to give it to Fighting-type Pokémon like Machamp and Primeape. You can always steal another Black Belt should you want more anyway.
