The Top 5 Best Psychic-Type Pokémon in FireRed and LeafGreen

Psychic Pokémon are one of the strongest special attackers in the game, which can be super useful if you know which ones to add to your Pokémon party. There’s a not a lot of them in the Kanto region as well, so that helps in narrowing down who’s at the top of the list. Want to know which are the best Psychic Pokémon in the game? Read on below!

Table of Contents

First up on our list of best Psychic Pokémon in no particular order is Alakazam.

Alakazam is the third and last evolution of Abra. Abra evolves into Kadabra upon reaching Level 16. Kadabra will then evolve into Alakazam when traded.

Alakazam excels in Special Attack and Speed. This means that aside from getting first turns in every battle, its strong Special Attack stat lends a lot of power to its moves. When faced with an opponent that is weak to Psychic-type moves, this may even mean instant KO.

It also has a wide array of pure Psychic moves, which can further deal damage thanks to STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus). Some moves it can learn include Future Sight at Level 30, Calm Mind at Level 33, Psychic at Level 36 and Trick at Level 43.

The only caveat is you need to trade to get Alakazam. Abra can be caught in the wild for a 15% encounter rate along Route 24.

If you’re having trouble catching one, you can even exchange the coins you’ve won from the arcade for an Abra in Celadon City.

With an Abra secured, it should be easy enough to evolve it to Kadabra. The difficulty lies in evolving your Kadabra to Alakazam, since you need to do a physical trade. Some of the things you would need to secure are a physical copy of the game, a friend who has a Kadabra and is willing to give it to you, as well as a physical or wireless cable to enable you to trade.

Mr. Mime

Mr. Mime also makes the cut as one of the best Psychic Pokémon in the game.

Mr. Mime does not have any former or future evolutions. You also won’t be able to find it in the wild. The only way to get Mr. Mime is by trading for it in-game. Head to Route 2 to find a man there willing to trade its Mr. Mime for an Abra.

Mr. Mime’s key stats and skills include its high Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed stat. This makes up for its poor Attack stat and average Defense.

It also is capable of learning an array of Psychic-type moves. Depending on the level you trade your Abra for Mr. Mime, it might come learned with the move Psybeam, and then it further learns unique moves such as Trick at Level 36, Role Play at Level 40 and Psychic at Level 43.

Mr. Mime might be the most accessible Pokémon from our list as you can get it early on in the game so long as you get access to Route 2. While there’s only one Mr. Mime in game as you can’t catch them in the wild, you can try to breed it should you want to have multiple Mr. Mime in your party.

Hypno is up next on our list of recommended Psychic Pokémon.

Hypno evolves from Drowsee at Level 26. You can also catch Hypno in the wild at higher levels as it can be found abundantly in Three Island’s Berry Forest.

Hypno’s key stat for making it to our list is its impressive Special Defense stat. This makes it able to withstand both physical and elemental attacks well, as well as resist moves Psychic types are normally weak against.

Like the others, it has the staple Psychic moves such as Psychic and Future Sight learned at Level 49 and Level 60 respectively.

Slowbro is a part-Water, part-Psychic Pokémon also making our list of the best of the best.

Slowbro evolves from Slowpoke when raised up to Level 37. It can further evolve into Slowking when traded and if holding a King’s Rock (READ: Where to find a King’s Rock and How to Use It).

Slowbro has decent to great stats across the board, with exception of Speed, which is pretty low, owing to its name. That said, it has a lot of HP and excellent Defense and Special Attack, which means it can dish out strong Water and Psychic moves as well as withstand type and elemental attacks of the enemy.

Its move set is also not unlike the others – it learns the regular Psychic type moves such as Amnesia and Psychic at Level 36 and 44, while also learning Water and Normal-type moves.

Last but not definitely not the least by any means, we have the legendary Pokémon Mewtwo.

Mewtwo is a pure Psychic Pokémon, and is first encountered at Cerulean Cave at the later stages of the game. Mewtwo will be at Level 70 when found, and you can find out how to get Mewtwo in your game by following our comprehensive guide here.

Top 5 Best Psychic-Type

As expected of rare Pokémon and Legendaries in the game, Mewtwo’s stats are way overpowered compared to ordinary Pokémon. It has excellent stats across the board, but its Special Attack and Speed are more than worth mentioning. Fun fact – Mewtwo has one of the highest Special Attack stat in the whole game.

Thanks to its outstanding Special Attack, you’re sure to dish out a lot of damage with its key Psychic moves. Mewtwo already knows Psychic as it’s learned at Level 66, and this deals up to 90 damage with 100 percent accuracy. Future Sight is learned at Level 88, while Amnesia, learned at Level 99 renders Mewtwo to sleep to recover full HP.

Of course, Mewtwo can only be added to your party towards the end of the game – after Elite Four and after doing some quests on Sevii Islands. That said, it’s not a bad idea to keep Mewtwo in your party once you do get it.

Psychic Pokémon are great additions to any Pokémon roster. They have a few weaknesses to their name and they pack a lot of power to their attacks. As always, our list serves as a recommendation on the best of the best in the region, but it all boils down to your personal preference and play style, if you’re even going to keep a Psychic Pokémon a mainstay in your party anyway.
