How to Choose Your Starter Pokémon’s Nature in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

You can “choose” your Starter Pokémon’s Nature by saving and reloading multiple times before clicking on your desired starter. Open up the Start Menu and click Save before choosing your Pokémon. Load as many times as you want until you get the nature you prefer.

Pokémon Natures are listed in the Pokémon Info tab, under the Trainer Memo. These are more than just personalities randomly assigned to your Pokémon as they also influence how a Pokémon’s stats would grow. You can read up more on the different natures available here.

Starter Pokémon’s Nature

When you start your game, you gain control of your character inside your house in Pallet Town. You trigger the cut scene of choosing your starter Pokémon when you try to walk out of the tall grass just north of your house.

Prof. Oak then brings you to his lab where three Poké Balls are displayed on his desk. He then lets you choose either one of three starters: Bulbasaur, Squirtle or Charmander.

Approach the desk and click on the Poké Ball of your preferred starter. When you receive the Pokémon, they come to you with a randomized nature.

There are some recommendations on which natures work best depending on your starter Pokémon, so if you want to “choose” these preferred natures, start by bringing up the Start Menu before you finalize your choice.

Save the game just before you accept your starter Pokémon. Once finished, click on the Poké Ball to receive your Pokémon and check its nature. If it’s not the nature you like, load your game and go through the process of receiving your Pokémon again until you get the nature you desired. The Pokémon’s nature will shuffle and change after each Save and Reload.

Basically, it’s just spamming the Save feature of the game until it randomizes your Pokémon’s nature to the one you want. Take note however that this is only applicable to the starter Pokémon at the beginning of the game. The only way to get a wild Pokémon with your desired nature is by catching a ton of them until you catch one with the nature you’re looking for.

Although tiresome, this technique can be useful if you’re doing a Pokémon challenge like Nuzlocke, or if you just want to maximize your Pokémon’s skills and abilities and enhance them through natures.
